**Citi and American Airlines are making significant changes to two popular AAdvantage credit cards.** Beginning January 24, 2027, the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select and Citi AAdvantage Business cards will each see their annual fees increase from $99 to $150.

The good news? Both cards are gaining new earning categories, statement credits, and travel protections. The first-year annual fee waiver also remains intact.

Here's what cardholders can expect.

## Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select: What's Changing?

The personal Platinum Select card is getting several useful upgrades.

**New and improved earning rates:**

- 3X miles on eligible AAdvantage Hotels and AAdvantage Cars bookings.
- 2X miles at gas stations and EV charging stations.
- 2X miles on select streaming services.
- 2X miles on eligible rideshare, public transportation, rail, tolls, and parking purchases.

**New and enhanced benefits:**

- Up to $100 annually in statement credits for eligible American Airlines inflight purchases.
- Up to $120 toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck every four years.
- Complimentary annual Walmart+ membership, valued at $98.
- 50% discount on an annual FOX One subscription.
- New trip delay, trip cancellation/interruption, rental car, and lost baggage protections.
- $150 American Airlines Flight Discount after $20,000 in annual purchases and card renewal, increased from $125.

The existing 25% discount on eligible inflight purchases is being replaced by the $100 annual statement credit.

### What Stays the Same?

The Platinum Select retains its core travel benefits:

- 2X miles on American Airlines purchases and at restaurants.
- 1X miles on other eligible purchases.
- One Loyalty Point per dollar of eligible purchases.
- First checked bag free on qualifying domestic American Airlines itineraries for the cardholder and up to four companions.
- Preferred boarding for the same group.
- Up to $180 annually in eligible Turo rental credits.
- 10% savings on eligible American Airlines Vacations packages.
- No foreign transaction fees.

## Citi AAdvantage Business: What's Changing?

Business cardholders are also getting new benefits, although the improvements focus more on business spending.

**New earning opportunities:**

- 3X miles on eligible AAdvantage Hotels and AAdvantage Cars bookings.
- 2X miles in one selected category: U.S. shipping providers, office supply stores, or U.S. advertising services.

The selected business category can be changed quarterly, with no cap on bonus miles earned in that category.

**New benefits include:**

- Up to $100 annually in eligible inflight statement credits, replacing the previous 25% inflight discount.
- Up to $120 toward Global Entry or TSA PreCheck every four years.
- 25% discount on a Melio subscription.
- Enhanced travel insurance protections.

The Business card retains 2X miles on eligible American Airlines purchases, car rentals, gas stations, and telecommunications, cable, and satellite providers.

It also keeps its $99 domestic round-trip companion certificate after $30,000 in qualifying annual purchases and card renewal.

The existing checked-bag, preferred boarding, and American Airlines Vacations benefits remain.

Business purchases also continue earning Loyalty Points, including an additional Loyalty Point for the primary cardmember on eligible authorized-user spending through December 31, 2028.

## Is the Higher Annual Fee Worth It?

The additional $51 annual fee isn't necessarily a bad deal, but it depends on whether you actually use the new benefits.

The $100 inflight credit could be useful for frequent American Airlines travelers. However, it won't have much value for passengers who rarely purchase food, beverages, or Wi-Fi onboard.

The Walmart+ benefit may also be worthwhile for Platinum Select cardholders who already pay for the service.

For business owners, the new 2X category could provide additional miles on substantial shipping, advertising, or office supply spending.

One important distinction: **Bonus earning rates increase redeemable AAdvantage miles, not Loyalty Points at the same multiplier.** A $100 qualifying 3X purchase generally earns 300 redeemable miles but only 100 Loyalty Points from card spending.

## Trash Panda Take

These changes are a mixed bag.

The new benefits make the cards more competitive, particularly the additional earning categories and travel protections. However, the $150 annual fee moves both products into a more expensive category.

For travelers primarily interested in collecting AAdvantage miles through welcome bonuses, the first-year annual fee waiver remains especially important.

For existing cardholders, the decision is more complicated. If you're keeping the card primarily for a free checked bag and preferred boarding, the additional $51 may be difficult to justify.

My approach would be to evaluate the benefits I actually use rather than assigning full face value to every new credit.

Readers interested in the Platinum Select welcome bonus can also check our [Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Offer & Review](https://www.trashpandatravel.com/citi-aadvantage-platinum-select-offer-review/) for the offer details and application link.

**Bottom line:** The new benefits arrive January 24, 2027\. Existing cardholders will see the higher annual fee at their next applicable renewal. Take a look at your American Airlines travel habits before deciding whether to keep either card.
