The $250 statement credit makes this version of the Brilliant offer particularly attractive because it effectively takes some of the sting out of the $650 first-year annual fee.

## Before Applying: Check Your Marriott Credit Card Eligibility

**Marriott credit card eligibility rules are insanely complicated.**

Your eligibility can depend on which Marriott cards you've previously held, whether they were issued by Chase or American Express, when you opened them, and when you last received a welcome or upgrade bonus.

I've put together a matrix showing how the various Marriott cards affect one another:

### [CHECK THE MARRIOTT CREDIT CARD ELIGIBILITY MATRIX — THE HOOPS OF FIRE](https://www.trashpandatravel.com/marriott-credit-card-eligibility-matrix-the-hoops-of-fire/)

The matrix covers cards including:

- Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant
- Marriott Bonvoy Bevy
- Marriott Bonvoy Business
- Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bold
- Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless
- Chase Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful
- Ritz-Carlton Card
- Legacy Marriott and SPG cards

The Brilliant in particular has restrictions involving certain Chase Marriott cards within **30-day, 90-day and 24-month windows**, depending on the card and whether you're looking at card ownership, approval or receipt of a bonus.

**Check the matrix before applying.**

Missing a 150,000-point welcome bonus because you applied a few weeks or months too early would be painful.

## What Are 150,000 Marriott Points Worth?

Marriott uses dynamic award pricing, so there isn't a fixed value for Bonvoy points. Your actual return depends heavily on where and when you redeem them.

Even using a relatively conservative valuation of around **0.6 cents per point**, 150,000 points would be worth approximately:

**150,000 × $0.006 = $900**

Add the **$250 statement credit**, and the welcome offer provides roughly **$1,150 in potential value** before considering the card's ongoing benefits.

Subtract the $650 annual fee and you're still around **$500 ahead during the first year**, even before assigning any value to Marriott Platinum Elite status or the card's other benefits.

Good Marriott redemptions can produce substantially more value than 0.6 cents per point.

## The Brilliant Card Has Some Serious Marriott Benefits

The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant isn't simply a card you get for the welcome bonus. It's Marriott's premium American Express card and comes loaded with benefits.

### Automatic Marriott Platinum Elite Status

Cardholders receive **complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status**.

Platinum status can provide benefits including:

- 50% bonus points on eligible Marriott stays
- Room upgrades, including suites when available
- Lounge access and/or breakfast benefits at participating brands
- Late checkout subject to Marriott's applicable elite benefit rules
- Welcome gifts at participating brands

For someone who stays at Marriott properties regularly, automatic Platinum status may be the single most valuable ongoing feature of this card.

### 25 Elite Night Credits Every Year

Brilliant cardholders receive **25 Marriott Elite Night Credits each calendar year**, making it considerably easier to work toward higher Marriott elite levels or annual Choice Benefits.

### Annual 85,000-Point Free Night Award

After your Card renewal month, you receive a **Free Night Award worth up to 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points**.

Marriott allows eligible Free Night Awards to be supplemented with additional Bonvoy points, which can open up some very expensive properties.

An 85K certificate used intelligently can potentially recover a significant portion of the Brilliant card's annual fee by itself.

One important distinction:

**This is an anniversary benefit, so don't count the 85K certificate as part of the first-year welcome bonus.**

### Up to $300 Per Year in Restaurant Credits

The card provides up to **$25 per month in statement credits for eligible restaurant purchases worldwide**, for a maximum of **$300 per calendar year**.

This is relatively easy to use compared with some premium-card credits, but it is still a monthly coupon:

**Use the $25 each month or lose it.**

If you would naturally spend at least $25 at restaurants every month, however, the full $300 can reasonably be valued near face value.

## Other Useful Benefits

The Brilliant also includes several additional travel and purchase benefits, including:

- Up to a **$120 Global Entry credit or up to $85 for TSA PreCheck**
- Up to a **$100 property credit** on qualifying two-night stays at Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis properties
- 25 Marriott Elite Night Credits
- No foreign transaction fees
- Trip cancellation and interruption coverage
- Trip delay coverage
- Baggage insurance
- Purchase protection
- Extended warranty protection

Terms, limitations and enrollment requirements apply to various benefits.

## How the Card Earns Points

The Brilliant earns:

- **6X Marriott Bonvoy points** at participating Marriott hotels
- **3X points** at restaurants worldwide
- **3X points** on flights booked directly with airlines
- **2X points** on other eligible purchases

Those earning rates make sense for Marriott spending, although I wouldn't necessarily use the Brilliant as my everyday card once the welcome-bonus spending requirement has been completed.

## Is This Brilliant Offer Worth Applying For?

For the right Marriott traveler, I think this is an excellent offer.

The combination of:

**150,000 points + $250 statement credit + Platinum status**

makes the first-year economics considerably easier to justify than with many Brilliant offers.

The $650 annual fee is still substantial, but someone who can naturally use the $300 annual restaurant credit effectively reduces the ongoing cost to approximately:

**$650 annual fee**
**− $300 restaurant credits**
**\= $350 effective annual cost**

Then you still have the annual 85,000-point Free Night Award.

That's the calculation I would focus on when deciding whether to keep the card after the first year.

If you can consistently redeem the annual 85K certificate for a hotel night that you would otherwise pay more than $350 for, the card becomes much easier to justify — even before putting a value on Platinum Elite status.

If the monthly restaurant credits feel like something you have to force yourself to use, however, value them accordingly rather than automatically treating them as $300 cash.

## Bottom Line

The new **150,000-point + $250 statement credit Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant offer** is one of the more attractive Brilliant welcome offers we've seen.

Let the actual American Express application determine whether you're eligible, and make sure you also check your Chase/Amex Marriott history using my:
