The Hawaiian Airlines Bank of Hawaii World Elite Mastercard has introduced a new welcome offer of up to 70,000 Atmos Rewards points after $2,000 in purchases. The card is issued by Barclays and carries a $99 annual fee.

While 70,000 points is down from the card’s previous 80,000-point offer, the new bonus comes with a much easier spending requirement.

New cardholders can earn:

  • 60,000 Atmos Rewards points after spending $1,000 during the first 90 days.
  • An additional 10,000 points after spending a total of $2,000 during the first 180 days.
  • 70,000 total points after completing both requirements.
  • $99 annual fee.

The previous publicly available 80,000-point offer required $5,000 in total purchases within six months. Cardholders earned 50,000 points after spending $2,000 during the first 90 days and another 30,000 points after reaching $5,000 within 180 days.

That means the new offer provides 10,000 fewer points but reduces the total spending requirement by $3,000.

Current 70,000-Point Offer vs. Previous 80,000-Point Offer

OfferFirst Spending RequirementTotal Spending RequirementTime Allowed
Current offer60,000 points after $1,00070,000 points after $2,000180 days
Previous public offer50,000 points after $2,00080,000 points after $5,000180 days

The previous offer provides the larger bonus, but the current promotion is likely more practical for applicants who do not want to manufacture spending or divert $5,000 of purchases to a card that earns only one point per dollar on most transactions.

Applicants give up 10,000 points while reducing the required spending by $3,000. That also leaves $3,000 that could potentially be used toward another credit card welcome bonus.

Was the Previous Offer Better?

The answer depends on how easily an applicant can meet the spending requirement.

Someone who could naturally spend $5,000 within six months would have been better off with the previous 80,000-point offer. The additional 10,000 points required another $3,000 in spending, however, producing only about 3.33 additional bonus points per dollar of incremental spending before counting the card’s ordinary rewards.

For applicants with limited spending, the current 70,000-point offer may be the more attractive and accessible promotion. It requires only $1,000 during the first three months and another $1,000 during the following three months.

The current offer is therefore best described as a smaller bonus with a significantly easier spending requirement, rather than simply an elevated or improved offer.

Bottom Line

The Hawaiian Airlines Bank of Hawaii World Elite Mastercard’s current 70,000-point welcome offer is down from the previous 80,000-point promotion, but it requires considerably less spending.

Applicants sacrifice 10,000 Atmos Rewards points while reducing the spending requirement from $5,000 to $2,000. For travelers who can comfortably meet the larger requirement, the previous offer was better. For everyone else, the new offer provides most of the points with less financial pressure and more opportunity to direct spending toward another welcome bonus.
