Booking rental cars through an Online Travel Agency (OTA) such as Expedia, Booking.com, or Priceline can lead to several complications compared to booking directly. Common issues for 2026 travelers include:

  • Customer Service "Finger-Pointing": When issues arise, the rental agency and OTA often blame each other. You may be stuck between a rental company that has no record of your booking and an OTA that has already charged you.
  • Lack of Reservation Priority: In high-demand situations or vehicle shortages, agencies often prioritize direct-booking customers. OTA renters are frequently the first to have their reservations "walked" or cancelled if inventory is low.
  • Hidden Fees & Price Discrepancies: OTAs may not display all local taxes or site-specific fees. Travelers often report being "blindsided" by additional charges at the counter that were supposedly included in the OTA's total.
  • Restrictive Modification Policies: Changing or cancelling an OTA reservation is significantly harder. You may face extra service fees from the OTA on top of the rental agency's policies, or find that a "non-refundable" booking offers no flexibility even in emergencies.
  • Loyalty & Benefit Loss: Most rental companies do not allow you to earn loyalty points or utilize elite status benefits (like skip-the-line service or free upgrades) when booking through a third party.
  • Data Synchronization Errors: Bookings may not sync correctly between systems, leading to incorrect driver names, wrong vehicle types (e.g., manual vs. automatic), or pickup locations being closed when you arrive because the OTA's data was outdated.
  • Insurance Complications: OTA-provided insurance is often third-party. If there is damage, the rental agency will charge your card directly, and you must then fight the OTA for reimbursement, rather than the agency handling it internally.
