Amex Cardholders Get a Free Version of point.me — And It’s Actually Useful

Finding a great airline award is often harder than earning the points to book it. American Express has a benefit that can make the process considerably easier: complimentary access to a special version of point.me for Membership Rewards members.

And despite some confusion online, you do not need an American Express Platinum Card to use it. U.S. cardmembers enrolled in Membership Rewards can access the service at no additional charge.

What Is point.me?

Point.me is an award-flight search engine. Instead of checking Air Canada Aeroplan, Flying Blue, British Airways, Singapore KrisFlyer and other programs individually, you enter your origin, destination and travel dates and let point.me search for award options.

The American Express version searches airline loyalty programs that participate in the Membership Rewards transfer program. It then shows potential flights, the program through which you can book them and instructions for transferring Membership Rewards points and making the reservation.

This can be particularly useful if you're looking for business- or first-class awards, where the difference between programs can be enormous.

The Best Part: It's Free

The regular point.me Standard membership currently costs $12 per month or $129 per year and provides real-time award searches across more than 30 airline loyalty programs and 150+ airlines.

The Amex version costs eligible cardmembers $0.

You log in using your American Express credentials, with no separate point.me subscription or payment required. You can then search before transferring any Membership Rewards points.

That's important because transferable points are most valuable while they remain transferable.

You Can Find Flights on Non-Amex Airlines

Here's where point.me becomes more interesting.

The airline operating your flight does not necessarily have to be an American Express transfer partner.

For example, an Amex transfer partner such as Air Canada Aeroplan may have access to award seats operated by another Star Alliance airline. Point.me can identify those opportunities because you're transferring Membership Rewards to the program issuing the award ticket, not necessarily the airline operating the airplane.

That opens considerably more possibilities than simply looking at Amex's airline transfer-partner list and assuming those are the only airlines you can fly.

It can also expose multiple ways of booking similar award space, allowing you to compare points requirements, fees and loyalty programs before deciding where to transfer.

What's Missing From the Free Amex Version?

There is a catch.

The Amex version is designed specifically around Membership Rewards, so it doesn't give you the full multi-currency experience of a paid point.me membership. If you also have substantial balances with Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One, Citi ThankYou or Bilt, the regular point.me service can search across those ecosystems as well.

The Amex version also doesn't include point.me's Explore feature, which can help flexible travelers identify destinations and dates with attractive award pricing.

But if you're primarily trying to figure out how to use Membership Rewards for a specific trip, those limitations may not matter much.

One Important Warning Before Transferring

Treat point.me as a powerful search tool—not as the final booking engine.

You cannot transfer points or book the ticket directly through the Amex point.me site. Once you find something, you'll transfer Membership Rewards to the appropriate airline program and complete the reservation with that program. Award availability can also change between the time point.me performs the search and when you attempt to book.

Always verify that the award is actually available on the airline program's website before transferring your Membership Rewards points.

That's especially important because credit-card-to-airline transfers generally cannot be reversed once completed.

This is one of those Amex benefits that's easy to overlook because it doesn't come with a monthly credit you have to remember to use.

For anyone sitting on Membership Rewards points, however, free access to point.me is genuinely useful.

It won't replace every advanced award-search tool, particularly if you're juggling points from several banks. But for quickly answering the question “What can I actually book with my Amex points?”, it's an excellent place to start.

And unlike another Amex coupon-book benefit, this one doesn't require you to spend anything to use it.
