Capital One Venture 75K Bonus + $300 Travel Stay Credit: $1,050+ in First-Year Value

Capital One has rolled out an excellent limited-time welcome offer on the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, adding a $300 hotel and vacation rental credit to the card's usual 75,000-mile bonus.

New cardholders can currently receive:

  • 75,000 Capital One miles after spending $4,000 within the first three months
  • $300 Capital One Travel Stays credit for hotels and vacation rentals during the first cardholder year
  • $95 annual fee

At the simplest possible valuation, the 75,000 miles are worth $750 toward travel. Add the $300 Stays credit and you're looking at $1,050 in travel value before subtracting the $95 annual fee.

And that's without doing anything fancy with airline transfer partners.

Capital One itself describes the current offer as providing more than $1,000 in travel value.

Capital One Venture Welcome Offer

Here are the important numbers:

BenefitValue
Welcome Bonus75,000 Capital One Miles
Minimum Spend$4,000
Time to Complete Spend3 Months
First-Year Stays Credit$300
Annual Fee$95
Basic Travel Value$1,050
Net First-Year Value Before Spending Rewards$955

You'll also earn at least 8,000 additional Capital One miles while completing the $4,000 minimum spending requirement since the Venture earns 2X miles on everyday purchases.

That effectively leaves you with at least 83,000 Capital One miles plus the $300 hotel/vacation rental credit after completing the bonus if all of the spending earns at the base 2X rate.

Not bad for a $95 card.

The $300 Credit Has an Important Restriction

Let's get this out of the way before someone books a $300 Southwest ticket and starts yelling at the raccoon.

This isn't the same $300 general Capital One Travel credit offered annually with the Venture X.

The Venture welcome offer includes a one-time $300 Capital One Travel Stays credit, which can be used specifically for:

  • Hotels booked through Capital One Travel
  • Vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel

It cannot simply be applied to flights or rental cars.

The credit is available during your first cardholder year and expires one year after account opening. It can be used all at once or across multiple eligible bookings.

You also don't earn rewards on the portion of a booking paid with the credit.

That's restrictive compared with a $300 statement credit, but hotels aren't exactly difficult travel expenses to manufacture.

If you travel even a couple of times per year, extracting the full $300 should be relatively easy.

75,000 Capital One Miles Are Worth at Least $750 Toward Travel

One of the things I like about Capital One miles is that you don't need to understand airline award charts to use them.

The easy option is effectively to use your miles toward eligible travel at 1 cent per mile.

That makes:

75,000 miles = $750 in travel

But that's only the floor.

Capital One also allows Venture cardholders to transfer miles to more than 15 airline and hotel loyalty programs, where knowledgeable travelers can potentially get considerably more than one cent per mile.

Useful transfer partners include programs such as:

  • Air Canada Aeroplan
  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club / Avios
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Finnair Plus
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • Virgin Red
  • Wyndham Rewards

There are others as well, and transfer ratios vary by program.

For someone willing to learn how airline awards work, 75,000 transferable miles can be worth substantially more than $750.

For everyone else, $750 toward travel is still perfectly respectable.

Sometimes boring and easy wins.

Venture Earns 2X Miles on Everything

The Venture's earning structure is refreshingly uncomplicated:

2X Capital One miles on virtually every purchase.

There are no quarterly categories to activate and no spreadsheet required to determine whether a merchant codes as dining, travel, entertainment, or artisanal llama accessories.

You swipe the card.

You get 2X.

There are also elevated rewards through Capital One Travel:

  • 5X miles on hotels
  • 5X miles on vacation rentals
  • 5X miles on rental cars

booked through Capital One Travel.

That makes Venture a good catch-all card for expenses where you don't already have a card earning 3X, 4X or 5X.

There's Also a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck Credit

The $95 Venture isn't as stripped-down as you might expect.

Cardholders receive up to a $120 statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck when the application fee is charged to the Venture card.

The benefit is available once every four years.

Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck eligibility once approved, so frequent international travelers will generally get more value applying for Global Entry.

And with TSA rolling out benefits such as its new Gateside program for PreCheck members, having a Known Traveler Number is becoming useful for more than simply getting through security faster.

Venture Includes Hertz Five Star Status

Capital One Venture cardholders can also enroll for complimentary Hertz Five Star status.

Five Star normally provides benefits including access to a wider selection of vehicles and potential upgrades, depending on location and availability.

Enrollment is required through the Capital One benefits page.

Rental-car elite status is never something I'd value at hundreds of dollars on paper, but when it turns a Toyota Camry reservation into something considerably nicer, it suddenly becomes much more interesting.

Lifestyle Collection Hotel Benefits

Venture cardholders also receive benefits when booking eligible Lifestyle Collection hotels and vacation rentals through Capital One Travel.

Benefits include:

  • $50 experience credit on each eligible stay
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Room upgrades when available
  • Early check-in when available
  • Late checkout when available

The $50 credit can potentially be particularly useful because it applies on eligible Lifestyle Collection bookings rather than being a once-per-year card benefit.

Obviously, don't pay substantially more through Capital One Travel just to receive a $50 credit.

Trash Panda Travel rule number 14: A credit isn't a discount if you overpay to use it.

Compare prices first.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

The Venture card also has no foreign transaction fees, making it perfectly suitable for international travel.

That should be expected from a travel card with a $95 annual fee, but there are still cards out there willing to charge you 3% for having the audacity to leave the country.

Don't Forget Capital One's 48-Month Rule

This is an important one.

Capital One's current terms state that you're not eligible for the Venture welcome bonus if you've received a new-cardmember bonus on either the Capital One Venture or Capital One Venture X within the previous 48 months.

Notice the distinction.

It's based on when you received the bonus, not simply when you opened or closed the card.

So if you're digging through your credit-card history trying to determine eligibility, find the date the previous bonus actually posted.

Interestingly, Capital One's current rules aren't completely symmetrical.

The Venture X bonus is restricted if you've received a Venture X bonus within 48 months, while the Venture bonus considers both Venture and Venture X.

In practical terms, someone may be able to move up from Venture to Venture X sooner than they could move back down from Venture X to Venture.

Capital One apparently has its own ideas about career advancement.

Check Pre-Approval Before Applying

Capital One provides a pre-approval tool that lets prospective applicants check card eligibility without affecting their credit score.

A final application can still result in a hard inquiry, but checking pre-approval first is worthwhile—especially with Capital One, which has historically been less predictable about approvals than some other issuers.

If Venture appears with the elevated offer during your eligibility check, that's certainly more reassuring than throwing an application into the Capital One black box and hoping a card comes back out.

Should You Get Venture or Venture X?

This offer creates an interesting situation because the cheaper Venture card currently has the more compelling first-year welcome package for many travelers.

Capital One Venture

  • $95 annual fee
  • 75,000-mile welcome bonus
  • One-time $300 hotel/vacation rental credit
  • 2X miles on everyday purchases
  • Up to $120 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit
  • Hertz Five Star
  • No airport lounge membership

Capital One Venture X

  • $395 annual fee
  • 75,000-mile welcome bonus
  • $300 annual Capital One Travel credit
  • 10,000 anniversary miles each year
  • 2X miles on everyday purchases
  • Capital One Lounge access
  • Priority Pass membership
  • Premium travel benefits

Venture X remains the better long-term product for many frequent travelers who will use its lounge access and annual credits.

But the current Venture offer is awfully attractive if your primary objective is extracting a large welcome bonus without committing to a $395 premium-card annual fee.

And because of the current bonus eligibility rules, there's also an argument for earning the Venture bonus first and pursuing Venture X later.

How Good Is This Offer?

This isn't technically the best Venture offer we've ever seen.

There has previously been a brief offer with 100,000 miles plus a $250 travel credit, but that unusually generous deal reportedly disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared.

The current 75,000 miles + $300 Stays credit is still one of the strongest Venture offers we've seen and substantially better than simply getting 75,000 miles alone.

At basic travel redemption values:

75,000 miles: $750
Stays credit: $300
Total: $1,050
Annual fee: -$95

Effective first-year value: $955

And again, that's before counting:

  • At least 8,000 miles earned while completing the minimum spending
  • Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit
  • Hertz Five Star
  • Lifestyle Collection benefits
  • Potentially higher value from transfer partners

The Trash Panda Take

This is a very good offer.

The $300 credit isn't as flexible as Capital One's marketing headline might initially make it sound because it's restricted to hotel and vacation rental bookings through Capital One Travel.

But that's a manageable restriction.

The real appeal is getting 75,000 transferable Capital One miles plus $300 toward accommodations on a card with only a $95 annual fee.

For someone who doesn't currently have Venture or Venture X bonus eligibility issues, I'd seriously consider this offer.

The Venture is also one of the easier cards to justify keeping after the first year. Unlimited 2X transferable miles provides a useful floor on everyday spending, there's no foreign transaction fee, and the Global Entry/TSA PreCheck benefit alone helps offset multiple years of annual fees if you need it.

Is this a "drop everything and apply before Capital One changes its mind" offer?

Not quite.

But it's close enough that anyone considering a Venture card should absolutely use this offer rather than settling for the standard 75,000-mile version.

Because when the bank decides to leave an extra $300 sitting beside the dumpster, the Trash Panda does not ask unnecessary questions.

It picks it up.
