Marriott Bonvoy and Japan Airlines Launch New Status Partnership: Free JAL FLY ON Points and Marriott Elite Status

Marriott Bonvoy and Japan Airlines have significantly expanded their partnership, and this one is much more interesting than the typical hotel-and-airline points transfer arrangement.

Under the new Marriott Bonvoy and Japan Airlines Preferred Partnership, members can link their Marriott Bonvoy and JAL Mileage Bank accounts to receive benefits including free JAL FLY ON Points, complimentary elite status, Marriott status challenges, and bonus Marriott Bonvoy points.

Best of all, the partnership is open to eligible members worldwide, not just travelers who live in Japan.

For Marriott Bonvoy members in particular, simply linking your account can provide as many as 40,000 JAL FLY ON Points each year, depending on your Marriott elite status. Titanium and Ambassador members can also receive complimentary JAL Crystal status or potentially higher status.

There is one important catch: timing matters, particularly when linking your accounts late in the calendar year.

Marriott Bonvoy Members Get Free JAL FLY ON Points

Marriott Bonvoy members receive JAL FLY ON Points based on their Marriott elite status:

• Marriott Bonvoy Member: 2,000 FLY ON Points
• Silver Elite: 5,000 FLY ON Points
• Gold Elite: 10,000 FLY ON Points
• Platinum Elite: 20,000 FLY ON Points
• Titanium Elite: 30,000 FLY ON Points plus complimentary JAL Crystal status or higher
• Ambassador Elite: 40,000 FLY ON Points plus complimentary JAL Crystal status or higher

These benefits are available each year under the partnership.

What makes this unusual is that you don't need to earn these FLY ON Points by flying. Marriott says eligible members receive them after linking their Marriott Bonvoy and JAL Mileage Bank accounts.

That could make Marriott elite status considerably more valuable for travelers who fly Japan Airlines.

How Valuable Are JAL FLY ON Points?

FLY ON Points are JAL's elite-status qualification currency. They are separate from JAL Mileage Bank miles used to book award flights.

Under JAL's standard qualification structure, the basic FLY ON Point thresholds include:

• JMB Crystal: 30,000 FLY ON Points
• JMB Sapphire: 50,000 FLY ON Points
• JGC Premier: 80,000 FLY ON Points
• JMB Diamond: 100,000 FLY ON Points

JAL also has requirements involving JAL Group flights and alternative flight-count qualification methods, so the complimentary Marriott FLY ON Points should not necessarily be viewed as a complete shortcut to status by themselves.

But they can provide a massive head start.

For example, a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member receives 20,000 FLY ON Points, while a Marriott Gold Elite member receives 10,000 FLY ON Points.

Titanium and Ambassador members have an even more interesting benefit because the partnership explicitly provides complimentary JAL Crystal status or above, depending on their existing FLY ON Point balance.

Marriott Titanium Could Be the Sweet Spot

This partnership makes Marriott Titanium status especially interesting.

A Titanium Elite member receives:

30,000 JAL FLY ON Points + complimentary JAL Crystal status or higher

Ambassador members receive:

40,000 JAL FLY ON Points + complimentary JAL Crystal status or higher

That means Titanium and Ambassador members don't necessarily have to figure out whether their complimentary FLY ON Points satisfy all of JAL's normal flight-related qualification requirements simply to obtain Crystal status—the partnership separately provides complimentary Crystal status or above.

For someone who already travels with JAL or another oneworld carrier, that could represent meaningful additional value from Marriott status.

Be Careful When You Register — Timing Matters

This may be the most important part of the partnership.

JAL FLY ON Points are based on the calendar year.

Marriott's FAQ actually provides an example showing why registration timing matters.

It gives the example of a Marriott Platinum member who already holds JAL Crystal status with 30,000 FLY ON Points. If that member registers for the partnership in December 2026, the additional 20,000 FLY ON Points could bring the account to 50,000 FLY ON Points and potentially trigger JAL Sapphire status.

However, if the member waits until January 2027, the 20,000 FLY ON Points are credited in the new calendar year. The previous year's FLY ON Points don't carry forward toward that year's qualification.

Trash Panda Travel Tip

Don't automatically link your accounts without looking at your JAL FLY ON balance first.

If you already have JAL activity during the current calendar year, registering now could potentially push you over an elite-status threshold.

On the other hand, if you have little or no JAL activity this year and it's already late in the calendar year, you may get more value by considering when you want your annual FLY ON Points credited.

Check the current partnership terms before delaying registration, of course, since loyalty programs can change their rules at any time.

JAL Members Can Also Get Marriott Bonvoy Status

The partnership works in the opposite direction as well.

JAL Mileage Bank members can receive complimentary Marriott status or participate in accelerated Marriott elite-status challenges.

JMB Base Members

JMB members without elite status can earn:

Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite after six qualifying nights within six months.

JMB Crystal Members

Crystal members can earn:

Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite after four qualifying nights within six months.

JMB Sapphire Members

Sapphire members receive:

• Complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite
• Opportunity to earn Marriott Gold Elite after 10 qualifying nights within six months

JGC Premier Members

JGC Premier members receive:

• Complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite
• 10,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points after 16 qualifying nights within six months

JMB Diamond Members

Diamond members receive:

• Complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite
• Opportunity to earn Marriott Platinum Elite after 10 qualifying nights within six months
• 15,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points after 16 qualifying nights within six months

The Platinum accelerator for regular Diamond members is currently limited to the first year of the partnership.

JMB Diamond Metal Members

Diamond Metal members receive:

• Complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite
• Opportunity to earn Marriott Platinum Elite after 10 qualifying nights within six months
• 15,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points after 16 qualifying nights within six months

Unlike the regular Diamond offer, Marriott currently states that the Diamond Metal Platinum accelerator can be used each year.

The Marriott Platinum Fast Track Is Particularly Good

The most valuable Marriott benefit in the partnership may be the 10-night Platinum challenge available to qualifying JAL elites.

Normal Marriott Platinum Elite qualification requires substantially more annual activity, so earning Platinum after only 10 qualifying nights within six months could be extremely valuable.

Platinum status can include benefits such as:

• 50% bonus points on eligible hotel spending
• Enhanced room upgrades, including select suites when available
• 4 p.m. late checkout at participating properties, subject to program rules and exceptions
• Welcome gifts at participating brands
• Breakfast at many participating brands
• Lounge access at participating properties

For travelers who already hold qualifying JAL elite status and stay at Marriott properties, this is potentially one of the easiest paths to Marriott Platinum currently available.

Credit Card Elite Nights Don't Count Toward the Challenge

There is an important restriction.

Marriott specifically says that Elite Night Credits do not count toward these accelerator challenges.

That includes Elite Night Credits earned from Marriott credit cards and promotional Elite Night Credits.

You need actual qualifying nights at qualifying rates during the six-month challenge period.

That's an important distinction for U.S. travelers who may already have 15, 25, 30 or more Marriott Elite Night Credits from credit cards.

Those credits can help with regular Marriott elite qualification, but they will not help you complete the JAL partnership status accelerator.

You Can Still Transfer Marriott Points and JAL Miles

The expanded partnership doesn't replace the existing Marriott/JAL points transfer relationship.

Members can still transfer:

• Marriott Bonvoy points to JAL Mileage Bank at a 3:1 ratio
• JAL Mileage Bank miles to Marriott Bonvoy at a 4:3 ratio

Members can also choose to earn Marriott Bonvoy points or JAL miles on eligible Marriott stays.

I generally wouldn't transfer Marriott points to airline miles unless I had a specific redemption in mind, but having another option is always useful—especially with an airline like JAL that can offer excellent premium-cabin award opportunities.

The Partnership Is Available Worldwide

One nice surprise is that this isn't limited to Japanese residents.

Marriott's FAQ specifically states that members can participate regardless of where they live, provided they are members of both Marriott Bonvoy and JAL Mileage Bank and meet the applicable eligibility requirements.

That makes this partnership relevant to U.S.-based Marriott members as well.

You'll need accounts with both programs and must link them through Marriott's official Marriott Bonvoy + Japan Airlines Preferred Partnership registration page.

My Take

This is a surprisingly generous airline/hotel partnership.

For occasional JAL travelers, the complimentary FLY ON Points may simply be a nice bonus. But for anyone actively pursuing JAL elite status, 10,000 to 40,000 annual FLY ON Points can materially change the math.

Marriott Titanium and Ambassador members arguably get the most immediate benefit because they receive both complimentary FLY ON Points and JAL Crystal status or higher.

On the other side, JAL Diamond and Diamond Metal members have access to an extremely attractive route to Marriott Platinum: just 10 qualifying nights within six months.

The biggest thing I'd watch is registration timing.

Because JAL FLY ON Points operate on a calendar-year basis, someone linking accounts in November or December could receive considerably less practical value than someone who coordinates the registration with their JAL flying plans.

Before linking your accounts, check your Marriott status, current JAL FLY ON Point balance and planned JAL travel for the remainder of the year.

A few minutes of planning could make this partnership considerably more valuable.
